In this chapter Lenina´s and Bernard’s experiences at the trip to the reservation are told. Lenina sees an old man and Bernard has to explain things to her. He knows the background of certain things. They also see a ceremony, which is described here. Linina has to take a lot of soma to handle with all the new experiences. In the last part of this chapter Linina and Bernard meet John, the son of Lina. Lina is the woman, who disappeared when the director and she made a trip to the reservation. She is the woman from the directors story.

The Director And His Experiences In The Reservation

a) Think of reasons why the Director tells Bernard about his problem when he went to the reservation 25 years ago.

Perhaps the Director wants to warn Bernard, to show him what terrible things can happen in the reservation and that he should watch out, that not the same things happen to him and Lenina. But when Bernard condoles with the director on the disappearance of his former girlfriend, the director in a way wakes up and notices that he has told the story to Bernard (p.83, ll.27,28), what he shouldn´t have done and so it´s not sure if he really wanted to give him a tip of watching for Lenina.

His appearances with the reservation are very deep inside his mind, he also sometimes dreams of ´his trip to the reservation and also that he finds her, so I think he in a way still has the hope of finding her. It´s just so deep in his mind, that he has the desideratum of telling somebody.

b) Explain why the Director has broken a taboo in talking about this episode.

This episode is a personal experience of the directors and it is something from his past. Telling the story so emotional, the director shows his emotions and so also his feelings to Bernard Marx. Telling it in such an emotional way, not noticing his environment anymore, it is shown that the director had a indecorous, emotional and longdrawn relation toward the girl, also he denies it (p.84, ll.1-3). Such emotional relationships are abnormal in the World State and abnormal things are in this world bad things.

In chapter six Lenina decides to fly with Bernard Marx to the resavation. When Bernard and Lenina meet, Bernard wants to be alone with Lenina and not in a crowd with other people, but she wants to do usual things. Bernard starts talking with Lenina about things like freedom, but she doesn´t understand him, because she is too conditioned. Bernard has a different understanding of a relationship that Lenina has, he for example doesn´t want to go to bed with her just the first evening. In part two of this chapter Bernard is at the director to get a permit for the journey. When getting it, the director tells him a story about what happened when he was in the reservation. In the end of the conversation the director says if Bernard doesn´t stop misbehaving like for example being alone often, he would be send to Iceland. In the last part of chapter six the beginning of Bernard’s and Lenina’s journey is described.

Interesting Things

In chapter five there are two things, which I think are very interesting. They exist in our world now as well as in the World State. But they have changed in a way, which I think is very interesting.

One thing is the Big Ben, which is in the World State named Big Henry. In “our world” it´s a big clock placed in London. In the World State it´s also placed in London and a clock, but it doesn´t ring like normal bells, but a immense bass voice from many golden trumpets sings the word ”Ford” (p.67, ll.25-27).

The second interesting thing is that at the Solidarity Service, the President makes the sign of a T. Normally from “our world” we know that, at such alike ceremonies, someone makes the sign of a cross, relating to God. In the World State the T probably shall relate to Ford and especially to one of his designed cars.

So I think in the World State Ford is very important for the people. He is something like a deity.

In the first part of chapter five it´s again talked about the different castes and the differences between them. The reader also gets to know that they have “phosphorus recovery” in the World State, so the people are also useful, when they´re dead. After Lenina and Henry played Obstacle Golf, they go dancing at Westminster Abbey. The second part of chapter five deals with Bernard going to Solidarity Service. It´s told how this takes place. Taking much soma, the people in the end think that the Greater Being is coming. Also the people are described and Bernard´s feeling doing this Service.

Lenina – Not Wanting To Be A Gamma

Lenina says she is happy not to be a Gamma (p.55, l.7). Explain her position and her thoughts about this.

Flying in the helicopter and seeing the huge amount of khaki coloured labourers (p.54, ll.24, 25), Lenina is happy for not having to stand in this crowd. She can sit in a relaxed way in the helicopter and fly where she wants to. Thus she is in a good position and thus it´s just normal that she doesn´t want to miss this position. Alone the colour, the Gammas are wearing, is hated by Lenina (p.54, l.21). This hate is just normal and she couldn´t do anything against it, also if she wanted to, because when she was an infant they drummed hating the colour into her mind.

At the beginning of chapter four Lenina asks Bernard Marx if she can come with him on a trip to New Mexico. Bernard Marx, who is smaller than usual, is not completely accepted from the other people and thus he feels like an outsider and has, because of that, no self-confidence and is very shy. Marx later in the chapter meets with a good friend, Mr. Helmholtz Watson. Both men are individuals and they also know that. Helmholtz Watson feels, that he could do something much more important, and tries to get this across to his friend. In this chapter is also something told about London and how it appears in the time, when the story takes place.

The Narrator

Chapter Three makes it clear that the narrator is neutral as well as omniscient. Can you show this in the text?

The narrator is not only neutral, but also omniscient. This gets clear in chapter three. Most of the time the narrator tells what happens and what the different persons are saying. He only tells what he can see and hear. This militates for a neutral narrator. But later in chapter three, the narrator also tells the cogitations of Bernard Marx to the reader. Bernard Marx is hating Ford (p.47, l.10) and he thinks that he “should like to kill him” (p.48, l.4). This point in turn militates for an omniscient narrator.

Thus the narrator is neutral as well as omniscient. He tells what he can see and hear, but also narrates about what different people are thinking.

Chapter three is firstly placed in the garden, where the students see little boys and girls playing sexual games. In this chapter among other things it´s talked about consumption, which plays a big role in the Brave New World. In general in the society in Brave New World the government decides about many things the people are doing. The government also decides to make the people play games where a lot of material is needed, for keeping the economy going. Sometime Mustafa Mond, a controller, appears and tells how things once, in previous times, have been in the world. In this chapter the reader also gets a conversation between two young women, Fanny and Lenina. They´re talking about men and their different opinions about different aspects become very clear. It´s also talked about a man, called Bernard Marx, with whom, according to prejudices and rumours, a mistake happened at his creation. He is someone, who doesn´t believe in Ford and also wants to kill him.

The Conditioning Of Infants

Explain how the conditioning of infants takes place, describing which particular sense is used and what the response of the infants is.

The conditioning of the infants is proceed in the Neo-Pavlovian Conditioning Rooms. The infants of a certain caste shall be conditioned to hate flowers and books. For achieving this, flowers and books are shown to the infants (p.20, l.6). When the infants see them, there are explosions and sirens and alarm bells start ringing (p.20, ll.24, 25). After some time the nurses stop this and the books and flowers are shown again to the infants. Now they shrank away in horror and start crying (p.21, ll.13, 14). The couples, books & loud noises and flowers & electric shocks, which are already in the infants minds, are now compromisingly linked (p.21, ll.16, 17). By hundreds of repetitions of this lesson, the linked couples cannot be destroyed and thus they stay forever.

The infants have had a bad experience. Always when they now see flowers and books, they get the reminder of the bad experience and they also get bad feelings and thus they get a dislike against flowers and books. In this way infants are conditioned to hate flowers and book for the rest of their lives.
